Editing with the Interface Tools
Photoshop has the most elaborate and interesting tools in the industry. The following list gives you the most important interface tools:
Crop tool: The Crop tool is located at the top right of the Photoshop window. Click and drag to select the area of the photo you want to keep and then click to place the crop area.
Puppet Warp: The Puppet Warp tool (see Figure 12-2) enables you to transform and distort the area you selected. To use this tool, select the area you want to distort and then click and drag to distort the area. You can also resize and rotate the area by grabbing the corners of the selection or using the handles at the edge of the selection.
Shadow/Highlight: This tool allows you to isolate areas of an image that are lighter and darker than others, providing a grayscale style to the image. For example, if you want to make a mountain look like a mountain or a person look like she’s on a rainy day, the Shadow/Highlight tool can do the trick. Click in the image to select a portion, and then choose Shadow or Highlight in the toolbar.
Levels: With the Levels tool (see Figure 12-3), you can control the exposure of your image and enable image adjustments like dodging and burning to reveal the image’s highlights and shadows. The Levels tool looks like an eye with a drop-down eye icon and an eye patch to adjust the blacks and whites of the image. Click in the photo to select a portion and then use the mouse wheel to scroll through the levels.
Red-Eye Fix: If a person’s eyes are red, the Red-Eye Fix tool fixes the problem (see Figure 12-4). Click anywhere in the image to select a face and then click the Red-Eye Fix tool on the bottom of the Tools palette (looks like an eye with a line over the eye). Drag over a person’s eyes

In Elements, you can apply filters. Photoshop has far more advanced filters than Elements.
If you work in the darkroom, Photoshop will have far more color tools for you. Lightroom and the Elements RAW editor have a limited set of tools.
The toolbars in Photoshop are more flexible than in Elements. In Elements, the toolbar is fixed. You cannot change it.
In Photoshop, you can use more than one tool at a time. In Elements, you can use only one tool at a time.
If you work in Elements, you can use the Picture Type tool in Photoshop.
In Photoshop, you can use all the tools in the Image Tools menu. In Elements, you can use most tools in the Edit menu. However, in Elements, you can use only two tools at a time — not using any tools at all.
In Photoshop, you can zoom in or out of your image. In Elements, you can zoom in or out only 1:4.
A power of Photoshop lies in its ability to work with images as if it were a photograph. You can manipulate the image in different ways and view it in different ways, and you can save it in different file formats. The number of file formats you can save an image in is limited, but you can save your images in the most useful formats.
